Ferrous Scrap Metal We Buy
We buy steel, cast iron, and cast steel from production, fabrication, demolition, and plant cleanouts, plus tool steel, high-speed steel, and alloy steels. We're the ferrous metal recycling partner for manufacturers, fabricators, and demolition and construction contractors. Our minimum for steel and iron is generally 10,000 lb per load.

Ferrous metals we buy
We buy these metals and their alloys, in all forms.

Steel
Steel from production, fabrication, demolition, and plant cleanouts.
- Busheling
- Steel Clips
- Steel Coils
- Heavy Melt
- P&S (plate & structure)
- Shred Steel
- Sheet Iron
- Silicon Steel
- Steel Turnings (Machine Shop Turnings)
- Machinery
- Bolster Plates (Steel and Iron)
- Steel Dies & Fixtures
- Galvanized steel clips
- Crop ends (bar, billet, and plate ends from mills and forge shops)
- Surplus steel coil and sheet
Cast iron & cast steel
Cast iron, ductile iron, and cast steel, including borings and turnings.
- Cast Iron
- Cast Iron Borings
- Cast Iron Turnings
- Ductile Iron
- Cast Steel Plate
- Cast Steel Tube & Pipe
Chrome alloys & alloy steel
We buy chromium (chrome) alloys and alloy steels. Chrome is rarely pure; it's usually part of an alloy. Our minimum for alloy steels (4130, 4140, 52100, 4340) is generally 10,000 lb per load.
- Chrome-moly steel (4130, 4140)
- 52100 bearing steel
- 4340 (nickel-chrome-moly alloy steel)
- Chrome stainless: listed on our stainless and specialty steel page →
- Nickel-chromium (80/20) resistance wire and heating elements: see nickel and cobalt alloys →
- Cobalt-chromium alloys (wear parts, hardfacing, and medical alloy): see nickel and cobalt alloys →
Tool steel & high-speed steel (HSS)
Tool steel and HSS from machine shops, tool rooms, and die shops, as solids and turnings: die blocks and die sets, worn drills, taps, end mills, cutters, and broaches, and bar and plate offcuts. Common grades include A-2, D-2, H13, M-2, and M-42. Our minimum for tool steel and HSS is generally 2,000–4,000 lb per load.
Specialty and crossover metals
Some metals sit between ferrous and nonferrous, and some of our specialty metals are ones you might file under steel.
- Stainless and chrome stainless (sometimes called chrome steel): we list them with our nonferrous metals. Stainless and specialty steel →
- Nickel, cobalt, titanium, carbide, tungsten, and moly: high-value specialty metals, on our nonferrous page →. Each has its own load minimum, listed on its page.
If it's an industrial metal alloy, ask us. We buy a wide range beyond these lists.

Forms we buy
We buy ferrous metals in all forms, including:
- Solids: sheet, plate, clip, coils, bar, rod, tube, pipe, wire, cable, rebar, beam, punchings, stampings, assemblies, end-of-life machinery, and busheling
- Turnings: turnings, borings, and chips
We don't buy metal in dust form.
Some materials we never buy, in any form. See what we don't buy.
Prepared or unprepared ferrous scrap?
When you ask for a quote, tell us whether your ferrous solids are prepared or unprepared. These are our normal standards; there are some exceptions.
- Prepared steel, cast iron, and cast steel: under 5 ft in length, width, and height, under 2,000 lb per piece, and clean, with no other metals or non-metallics mixed in or attached. This includes chrome-moly and other alloy steels.
- Prepared tool steel and HSS: the same, but under 4 ft in length, width, and height.
- Unprepared: oversize, overweight, or mixed with other metals or non-metallics.
Not sure which applies? Email photos to sales@arrmetals.com and describe it as best you can.
Frequently asked questions
Do you buy cast iron and steel turnings?
Yes. Cast iron borings, cast iron turnings, and steel turnings (machine shop turnings) are on our ferrous list. Tell us about any oil or coolant.
Do you buy end-of-life machinery?
Yes. Machinery is on our ferrous list. Antifreeze, oil, and flammable liquids are on our don't-buy list, so tell us what the machinery held.
Do you take steel from demolition jobs?
Yes. We work with demolition and construction contractors. P&S (plate & structure), Heavy Melt, and beam are all on our list.
Where are stainless and tool steel?
Tool steel and HSS are listed on this page and have their own page under ferrous. Stainless and chrome stainless (also called chrome steel) are on our nonferrous page, with the other alloys that share the 4 ft standard.
