Tool Steel & High-Speed Steel Scrap We Buy
Machine shops, tool rooms, and die shops build up worn tooling, die blocks, offcuts, and turnings in tool steel and high-speed steel (HSS). We buy tool steel and HSS and all of their alloys, as solids and turnings. Tell us the grade if you know it, or tell us it's mixed. Our minimum for tool steel and HSS is generally 2,000–4,000 lb per load.

Tool steel and HSS grades we buy
We buy these metals and their alloys. Open the section for the full list.
Tool steel & high-speed steel (HSS)
Tool steel and HSS from machine shops, tool rooms, and die shops. Tell us the grade if you know it.
Tool steel and HSS alloys we buy (full list)
Tool steel (A-2, D-2, H13, M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4, M-35, M-42, T-1, T-2, T-15, T-42)
More tool steel: O-1, S-7, D-3, H-11, P-20 (mold steel), die blocks and die sets
High speed tool steel (M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4, M-35, M-42, T-1, T-2, T-15, T-42)
More high speed tool steel: M-7 / M-50, HSS cutting tools (drills, taps, end mills, cutters, and broaches)

Forms we buy
- Solids: sheet, plate, clip, bar, rod, tube, wire, punchings, and assemblies
- Turnings: turnings, borings, and chips
Prepared tool steel and HSS solids are under 4 ft in length, width, and height, under 2,000 lb per piece, and clean. That's the 4 ft standard we use for nonferrous metals, stainless and alloys, not the 5 ft ferrous standard. See prepared or unprepared.
We don't buy metal in dust form.
Some materials we never buy, in any form. See what we don't buy.
How to describe your material
The more you tell us, the faster we can quote:
- Tool steel or HSS, or both. If you know the grade (for example, D-2, H13, M-2, or M-42), tell us. "Unknown" or "mixed" is a fine answer.
- What it is: die blocks and die sets, worn cutting tools (drills, taps, end mills, cutters, and broaches), bar and plate offcuts, or turnings.
- Form: solids or turnings.
- Prepared or unprepared (solids), using our standard. Die blocks and die sets can be heavy, so give an approximate weight per piece.
- Carbide in the load: say if any carbide-tipped tools or carbide inserts are mixed in.
- Oil or coolant on turnings.
Keep it separate to protect its value
- Keep HSS apart from carbide. Carbide-tipped tools and carbide inserts go in their own container.
- Keep tool steel apart from HSS where you can.
- Keep grades apart where you can, for example D-2 apart from M-2.
- Keep tool steel die blocks and die sets apart from plain-steel dies and fixtures, which we buy as ferrous ("Steel Dies & Fixtures").
Frequently asked questions
Do you buy worn drills, taps, and end mills?
Yes. Worn HSS cutting tools, including drills, taps, end mills, cutters, and broaches, are on our list. Tell us if any are carbide. We buy carbide too, but keep it apart.
Do you buy die blocks and old dies?
Yes. Tool steel die blocks and die sets are bought here. Plain-steel dies and fixtures are on our ferrous list as "Steel Dies & Fixtures." Tell us which you have and the approximate weight per piece.
My tool steel and HSS are mixed together. Can you still quote it?
Yes. Tell us it's mixed and email photos to sales@arrmetals.com. Keeping grades apart helps, but a mixed load is fine to quote.
Do you buy tool steel and HSS turnings?
Yes: turnings, borings, and chips, one grade or mixed. Tell us about any oil or coolant.
